Trail Cams Capture Rare Footage of Wolves Feeding on Bull Elk

Wildlife cinematographer Jake Davis came across a bull elk carcass in a remote area near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, so he did what any wildlife cinematographer would do—he set up $100,000’s worth of trail cameras around the carcass to see what came sniffing. Davis ended up capturing rare footage of wolves (and many other animals) feeding on the bull elk over the course of several weeks. He even caught footage of a wolf running off with one of his 10 cameras.

Davis originally came across a wounded bull elk, and he hypothesized it had recently survived a wolf attack. When he came back to the site, he saw the animal had died of its injuries. Seizing an opportunity to capture footage of the animals that came around to feed on the carcass, Davis carefully set up 10 remote trail cameras and left.

When Davis returned to the scene, he was thrilled with the footage his cameras captured over the course of six weeks. A wolf pack had visited, along with a golden eagle, a fox, and many other animals. At one point, a wolf even picked up one of his cameras and walked off with it. (He eventually found it.)
