Bison are the largest land mammals in North America. While the average adult male bison weighs between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds, some massive bison have clocked in around 2,800 pounds.

We’re not sure the exact weight of a bison in a new viral clip, but we do know it was heavy enough to crack a wooden walkway at Yellowstone National Park.

The video from Instagram user @weloveyouhikers, was filmed at Norris Geyser Basin, a popular destination in Yellowstone.
The account used the post as a reminder of just how powerful these animals can be.
“In Yellowstone, you are a guest in the wild. Bison may seem calm, but they can run up to 35 mph — faster than any human — and can pivot quickly,” the account wrote. “Each year, more people are injured by bison than by bears in the park.”
In the clip, several people on the boardwalk pause as a bison approaches. When the animal steps onto the wooden deck, one of the planks gives way and cracks. Another bison follows moments later but somehow avoids causing the same damage.
How far should you stay from a massive bison?
The National Park Service (NPS) has the answer. With an estimated 5,000 bison in Yellowstone, encounters are not uncommon, and visitors should always be prepared.
The NPS says people should stay at least 25 yards from bison at all times. If a bison gets closer, visitors should move back to keep that distance at all times. If a bison charges, the NPS recommends running.
“Do not stand your ground!” they wrote on their website. “Immediately walk or run away from the animal. If the bison follows you, spray bear spray as you are moving away, and seek cover behind nearby trees or cars.”
