Each year, elk migrate from higher-elevation ranges to lower-elevation ranges for the winter, where they are more likely to find food to forage and the conditions are more favorable (e.g., less snow). In North America, elk live primarily in the western half of the continent in the U.S. and Canada, and some herds migrate over 100 miles one way to reach their wintering grounds.

Greg Balvin recently shared a video of the elk migration within the National Elk Refuge near Jackson, Wyoming. Balvin and his partner Sandra Mell are wildlife photographers who live in the Tetons, and they frequently share elk content on social media.

Balvin notes that his video shows an elk herd crossing Miller Butte in 2024. Several people note in the comments section that this natural phenomenon is a beautiful thing to behold.
