Eddie Hunnell couldn’t stand by as raging floodwaters in Grassy Creek, North Carolina began to sweep a house away with a woman trapped inside. Hunnell was visiting the area for his son’s wedding. A flood courtesy of Hurricane Helene started to wash the home down New River, and Hunnell heard people screaming. The brave man realized he needed to do something to rescue the trapped woman from the dangerous floodwaters.
Hunnell armed himself with a life jacket and some rope before jumping into the floodwaters and swimming amidst the strong current to the woman, Leslie Worth. He was able to bring Worth across the river to the bank and, ultimately, to safety.
He told local WCNC News: “I grew up swimming on a swim team. I was a lifeguard. I’m in OK shape, and I just couldn’t watch her die. I felt like I needed to do that.”
Though Worth and her husband Phil lost all of their belongings, they smiled broadly in a photo with Hunnell after the stranger’s act of heroism saved Leslie’s life. The couple attended Hunnell’s son’s rehearsal dinner after the ordeal as special guests.
