A Good Samaritan was in the right place at the right time to help a surfer who needed it. Large waves were battering the San Diego, California coastline, prompting the Good Samaritan, Benita Karo, to take out her phone and start recording. That’s when she witnessed a wave knock a surfer who was walking out of the ocean against some rocks, and he didn’t resurface. The impact had knocked him out, so she ran down to help.

According to the California Post, Karo entered the water and held the man’s head above the water until other people helped her pull him from the water. When emergency responders arrived, Karo says the man was conscious and breathing but struggling. During the incident, Karo got a bit scratched up, but she says her instincts and former lifeguard training kicked in when it was needed most.
