Whether you’re going on a family camping trip or your little adventurer is heading out with his or her scouting troop, you may need a new sleeping bag, like this one from REI Co-Op that is great for three seasons. The synthetic fibers hold up against the cold and it’s also water-repellent, making it great for small spills in the tent.

Your kiddo may also need a backpack. This one from Deuter is a great option for school and the great outdoors, with an 8-liter capacity. Fill the backpack with items to keep your kids protected from the elements, like a small bottle of sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses. Maybe grab an eyewear retainer too to keep their sunglasses close when they’re out on the trails.

Invest in some base layers for your kids’ time outside this fall. Get them solid pairs of wool socks to keep their feet warm and dry, and a good fleece will make a great addition to their fall wardrobe. This one from Patagonia is lightweight and comes in a variety of colors, making it a great option for your kid, no matter what her style is.

If your kids have outgrown their hiking boots along with the rest of their shoes, pick up a new pair of hiking boots like these ones from Adidas, which offer stability on the trail with an over-the-ankle design.
If you’re worried about the cold weather becoming too much, it’s never too early to look into a new heavy coat for the winter to ensure warmth in the great outdoors. You can also consider a bib to keep their full bodies warm if it’ll be snowy. You’ll also want to pick up some gloves or mittens to keep their hands warm.
