WATCH: Burrowing Owls Bobbing Their Heads Is the Absolute Best

Who knew that burrowing owls were the cutest things ever? A wildlife photographer and self-described “bird nerd” who goes by @lydebug on Instagram shares some incredible photos and videos of various birds, but she has a soft spot for owls. Some of her most popular work online are her videos of burrowing owls bobbing their heads.

Videos by Outdoors

Unlike most owl species, which nest in trees, burrowing owls nest on the ground. They live in underground in burrows they’ve dug themselves or taken over from other animals. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), these unique owls live in “wide-open, sparsely vegetated areas like prairies, deserts, grasslands and agricultural fields.”

Since an owl’s eyes are fixed in its head, it must move its entire head to see in different directions. That’s why owls can turn their heads almost all the way around, and it’s also why owls bob their heads when they’re curious.

Lydebug somehow makes this behavior even cuter by setting her burrowing-owl videos to funny and/or adorable music.
