A mother bear and her cubs fled another bear, and, in the process, they gave a group of tourists in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve an unforgettable show. Natural Habitat Adventures shared footage of the moment the brown bear family came bounding toward the group on Instagram. The young cubs rear up on their hind legs but never stray too far from mom’s protective presence.

“#FromTheField on our Alaska Grizzly Ship Adventure! An unforgettable moment in Katmai: a mother bear and her spring cubs dash towards our group, fleeing another bear — all captured on video by Nat Hab traveler Susan Willingham!” wrote Natural Habitat Adventures in its post sharing the video. “This is why exploring the Bear Coast with a professionally trained Expedition Leader is so important. With a deep commitment to safety, respect, and understanding, our small groups maintain a careful distance and blend so seamlessly into the landscape that sometimes, the bears hardly notice we’re there.
Katmai is one of the few places where wild brown bears coexist peacefully with humans — a testament to decades of responsible wildlife viewing.”
