District of Squamish posted about the incident on Facebook, confirming the bear was indeed a mother and the attack was defensive in nature. For this reason, wildlife officials are leaving the bear in the area and blocking it off to the public.

“Due to a recent incident where a mother bear defensively swiped a trail runner, the BC Conservation Service is asking people to avoid the Skwelwil’em Squamish Estuary Wildlife Management Area until further notice,” the district wrote. “Conservation officers are continuing to monitor the bear activity in the area. Signs and hazard tape have ben installed at trailheads.”
