Brown Bear Attacks Mountain Biker on Trail in Alaska

A mountain biker riding on the Dome Trail near Anchorage, Alaska, suddenly came upon a brown bear on the trail. The bear charged at him, making contact, but then retreated, according to local news. There is no specific information about the mountain biker’s injuries, but they’re labeled as “minor.”

Officials closed the trail after the attack, saying that the bear acted defensively after being startled by the mountain biker coming around a corner quickly.

Alaska Fish and Game biologist Cory Stantorf told local news that mountain bikers are at particular risk of bear attacks, simply because they’re traveling on trails more quickly, which can startle these animals into a defensive charge, just as it did in this case.

The mountain biker was carrying bear spray, but he didn’t have a chance to use it, because it all happened so fast.
