Three Bears Euthanized After Injuring Two People in Idaho

Wildlife officials euthanized a mother bear and her two cubs after an incident involving two people in Salmon, Idaho, late last week. According to Idaho Fish and Game, the individuals attempted to stop a juvenile bear from entering their home in the early hours of October 2. The encounter resulted in injuries to both people, and one person was brought by helicopter to a local hospital for treatment.

“Idaho Fish and Game and the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office responded [to the incident] around 4:30 a.m. and mobilized the Fish and Game Wildlife Human Attack Response Team to investigate and secure the scene,” the press release reads. “The bears were no longer at the residence when officials arrived at approximately 6 a.m. A houndsman was used to track the bears, and the sow was found dead, having been shot by the victims’ neighbor shortly after the attack. The juveniles were trapped early the next morning and euthanized.”

Unfortunately, the bears had learned they could get an easy meal in this neighborhood. Idaho Fish and Game said there was another report of bears in the area on October 1, when the same sow and her cubs were snacking on the victims’ neighbor’s chickens and unsecured trash on neighboring properties.
