Freshwater Tips: Jigging for Walleyes

When it comes to the basics of jigging for walleyes, the first thing you want to think about is the size and weight of your jig. The depth of the water can determine what size jig you use, as with deeper water, you may want to use a heavier jig. Another thing to be thinking about is current. If there’s a stronger current, you may need to use a heavier jig. What you’re trying to do is as you’re pulling the jig back to the boat, you want to be able to feel if there’s a bite or if there’s structure along the bottom. Another thing you want to take into consideration is color. On a bright day, you may want to use a brighter jig and on overcast days, you may want a darker color. This can sometimes just be through trial and error to see what fish are biting. Good luck the next time you’re jigging for walleyes!
