Canadian Man Leapt Onto Attacking Polar Bear to Save His Wife

A man likely saved his wife from a gruesome fate when he “leapt onto” a polar bear that was attacking his loved one outside their home in Fort Severn First Nation, Ontario, Canada. The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service shared details about Tuesday’s incident on its website and its official Facebook page, saying the man is now recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

“Following an investigation, police learned a couple – an adult male and adult female – had exited their home before 5 a.m. to find their dogs. While in the driveway of their home, a polar bear lunged at the woman,” wrote the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service in a statement. “The woman slipped to [the] ground as her husband leapt onto the animal to prevent its attack. The bear then attacked the male, causing serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and legs.”

A neighbor then came to the man’s rescue, shooting the bear several times. Police say the bear released the man and retreated to a nearby wooded area, where it later died from its injuries. The man is recovering and his identity has not been released.
