For the first time over 10,000 years, there’s a live dire wolf on Earth. In fact, there are three of them. Colossal Laboratories and Biosciences has managed to de-extinct the dire wolf, and the result is not only mind blowing but also surprisingly adorable.

Colossal announced its scientific feat yesterday, but the dire wolves—Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi—aren’t newborns; they’re between two and six months old. The two males, Romulus and Remus, were born October 1, 2024, and Colossal has now shared video of the wolves’ very first howls from last fall. Today, they’re strapping young wolves at just over six months old. Meanwhile, a female dire wolf, Khaleesi, was born January 30, 2025, and she’s growing quickly.
Yesterday, Colossal shared a YouTube video sharing the dire wolves’ journey thus far. “In this video, follow Romulus and Remus, born on October 1, 2024—the first animals in history to be brought back from extinction,” the company wrote in the YouTube description. “Watch them take their first steps, hear their first howls, and see a ton of highlights from their first five months of life in a brand-new world. You’ll also meet Khaleesi—a little younger, but the very first female dire wolf brought back from extinction.”
The company also posted several updates on social media. Meanwhile, Time posted a feature digging into the science of dire-wolf de-extinction to coincide with Colossal’s big announcement.
