A San Clemente, California, couple staying at the resort heard the man’s cries for help and rushed to the beach to try to save him. Initially, they thought he was stuck in a rip current. By the time they realized a crocodile had the man by the leg and was thrashing him around underwater, it was too late.
Authorities were able to recover the man’s body during an overnight search-and-rescue operation. There are signs at the beach warning guests about crocodiles that inhabit the coastline.
