One half of a famous bald-eagle pair, an eagle named Jackie, is currently in wildlife rehabilitation. Sadly, the Ojai Raptor Center has announced that the eagle’s condition has taken a turn for the worse. Jackie and her mate, Shadow, are the stars of a live-streaming nest cam out of California’s Big Bear Valley.

In July, two subadult eagles attacked Jackie while she was grounded. The Ojai Raptor Center ended up taking her in, caring for her, and is still working to understand her condition. The most recent update included some “difficult news.” Essentially, Jackie’s anemia has worsened.

“Patient Update: Bald Eagle 26-519,” wrote the Ojai Raptor Center in yesterday’s post. “Today’s bloodwork brought some difficult news. Her packed cell volume (PCV) has dropped to 13%, which means her anemia has worsened since our last update. Our veterinary team is responding quickly. Additional advanced diagnostic testing is now underway, and expedited laboratory testing has been requested as we continue working to better understand her condition and guide the next steps in her treatment. At this stage, we do not have further answers to share, but we promise to keep you informed as soon as we have meaningful new information.”
