Hiker Discovers Homemade Explosive Devices Along Popular Trail

A hiker exploring the Saigon Trail in La Jolla, California certainly didn’t expect to find a string of homemade explosive devices littering the trail through a slot canyon. But, he did. The hiker alerted authorities, and the Bomb Squad took over from there.

San Diego Fire-Rescue posted photos of the dangerous “mystery objects” on social media. Meanwhile, the San Diego community is royally freaked out, especially considering the recent bomb threat at the San Diego International Airport.

“Last week, the Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST), Bomb Squad, ATF, and HazMat responded to a report from hiker who had come across multiple suspicious devices along Saigon Trail in La Jolla Farms,” wrote San Diego Fire-Rescue in an Instagram post sharing photos of the crime scene. “Among the items? A hollowed-out cork filled with black powder and a hobby fuse and two gallon jugs of gasoline taped together with homemade fuses.”

Once collected, the suspicious items underwent testing. “San Diego Fire-Rescue’s Bomb Squad inspected the devices, HazMat tested the contents for safety, and MAST investigators collected the evidence,” the post says. “Thankfully, none of the devices functioned as intended and detectives and ATF will further investigate.”
