Joshua McCartney says he was hiking through a forest when he came across an overgrown entrance that led underground. He decided to check it out, and what he found is a bit mind blowing. This hiker discovered a labyrinth of underground tunnels, along with small, creepy rooms, rusty, blasted-off doors, and even a series of former toilets. Can you imagine making this discovery?

In reality, McCartney is no regular hiker. He’s a guidebook author and content creator who travels to off-the-beaten-path places and shares videos of himself exploring “hidden gems.” He doesn’t explain how he knew to look for this particular overgrown entrance, but we assume he had some inkling that it was there before he set off on his hike. He also doesn’t share location information.
Commenters speculate about what the network of underground tunnels and rooms may have been used for. One popular suggestion is that it’s a bunker from the Cold War.
“I was not meant to find this place!” McCartney wrote in his Instagram post sharing the video of his discovery. “This is definitely one of the creepiest abandoned places I have explored!”

In Germany there are laws regarding leaving the path, injuries that might occur are totally your responsibility, and souvenirs that are stolen in such situations have rather high penalties. Even when going in with guides tourists have been known to visit hospitals directly as a mishap can occur. Just ask Tom Hanks.
