A kayak fisherman recently had a close encounter with a great white shark off the coast of Half Moon Bay, which is south of San Francisco, California. He says he heard a splash, turned to look over his shoulder, and spotted a massive fin and gray shadow longer than his 12.5-foot kayak. It was exactly what he thought it was: a great white shark. He quickly reeled in his line and sat there mildly panicking while the shark swam right next to him.

“David Slavich was kayak fishing Sunday afternoon when he captured this white shark swimming by,” wrote @nbcbayarea in a post sharing Slavich’s footage. “He says he was about 1.5 miles from shore. David says he will no longer kayak alone, and instead, go with a buddy.”
