For every attempted-selfie-with-a-bear story, we need a few safe wildlife-encounter stories to remind us that most people recreating outside respect animals and give them the space they deserve. A recent one from the Adirondacks of New York State shows a kayaker peacefully encountering a moose that had come to cool down in the water.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shared the video from Sean Heagerty, saying Heagerty came across the moose in the area of Moose River Plains Wild Forest in the central Adirondacks. In the video, the moose enters the water and looks curiously out toward Heagerty’s kayak. Eventually, it moves on. The scene is idyllic.

“If you didn’t notice, it’s been a little hot outside! Take a look at this moose keeping cool in the Adirondacks,” wrote the department in its Instagram post sharing the footage. “Did you know that moose are excellent swimmers? They can close their nostrils to dive and forage for vegetation. This adaptation is important since 25% of a moose’s diet is aquatic vegetation.”
