We spoke with Bobby McDonald, and he filled us in on where to stay, what to do – and even which museums to venture out to. Listen to our full interview here:

Oak Creek Campground Kentucky
Camp Kentucky: I’m talking with Bobby McDonald today at Oak Creek Campground in Kentucky. How’s it going today, Bobby?
Bobby McDonald: Going pretty good.
CK: So, let’s just start with how long Oak Creek Campground has been there and how it got started.
Bobby McDonald: We opened in 1969. My grandparents started it then. Well, started construction in 1969; opened in 1970. We’ve been in business for 43 years, more than 43 years.
CK: Wow, a long time.
Bobby McDonald: Yeah.
CK: And what are the most popular activities for the guests there?
Bobby McDonald: A little bit of everything. Normal playground. Basketball. Corn hole. Video arcade. Swimming pool. We do have, during the summer – pretty much April through September -, live music every Friday and Saturday night. We even have National acts that come in.
CK: Oh yeah, I know them. Cool. Now, what are some of the other attractions in the area worth checking out if I were staying there for the weekend?
Bobby McDonald: We have numerous antique places to go to. They’re pretty popular in our area. Germantown, called Mainstrasse Village, which is in Wilmington, Kentucky, only about 15 minutes away from us. Great Fishing Museums, Art Museums. Newburg, Kentucky has a great aquarium right on the river. They have riverboats.
CK: Fun.
Bobby McDonald: People that are into religion stuff, we have a Creation Museum out here, which is huge. All kinds of – I’ve heard it’s very spectacular. I’ve never actually been there myself, but it draws quite a bit of people. We probably have at least two or three families every week during the summer that come just to see that place.
CK: Oh, sure, cool. Two more questions for you, Bobby. If you were going to spend just one hour in Oak Creek Campground hanging out, how would you spend your time?
Bobby McDonald: Just getting to know as many campers as I could. Hanging out around the campfire. That’s the way that it’s always been. You come in, you don’t know anybody, and hopefully by the time the weekend is over, you’ve made a lot of friends.
CK: Cool. And if you were just going to spend one night in Oak Creek Campground, which specific campsite would you stay at and why?
Bobby McDonald: Well, in our overnight sessions, it would be spot number 17. Right now it’s the only spot that has actually a wooden deck. And in the corner, it has a lot more grass areas than some of the other sites. You have some seclusion and it’s right next to the creek.
CK: All right, cool. That’s exactly the kind of tip we want to pass on to our visitors. Well, thanks for taking a little time out of your day, Bobby, to chat with us about Oak Creek Campground in Kentucky.
Bobby McDonald: All right, thank you.
