Jake Rau was driving through the Willamette National Forest in Oregon when, suddenly, he spotted a wolf. He filmed the animal and contacted park rangers, who said it was the first-ever confirmed sighting of a gray wolf in that area. In an interview with local news, Rau says the video shocked and excited the biologist who came to meet him.

KGW News reports that there are currently more than 200 gray wolves in Oregon, which is up from just 14 individuals a decade ago. Perhaps in the future, sightings like this won’t be quite so rare.
