BBC shared the intriguing story of how two pilots of powered paragliders almost became the lunch of two polar bears. The event occurred in Staffordshire, at Peak Wildlife Park in Leek. It was a normal day at the wildlife park until park staff noticed the powered paragliders.

At first, it was just something fun to observe. OH, look at those two in the sky sort of situation. After all, in the beginning, it appeared that the two pilots would safely land in a field beyond the enclosure. However, as they began to drift closer, it was clear that that was no longer the case.

The two paragliders began to head directly towards the animal enclosure, which contained two male polar bears. Park director James Butler recalled the details from the event and shared them with the outlet.

“Polar bears are among the world’s most dangerous predators,” he shared with the outlet. “Had the paragliders landed there, the outcome could have been tragic.” Luckily, park staff were prepared. Once it was clear that the paragliders were most likely going to land in the exhibit a radio call was made.

Afterward, they rushed the compound “armed with non-lethal firearms in case the worst happened.”

What Happened Next?

Luckily, by some miracle, both gliders managed to avoid the enclosure and becoming the polar bears’ lunch. “They cut their engines and appeared almost certain to land in the field containing the bears,” Butler recalled. However, “at the last moment, they diverted their course.” Butler assumed they did so after spotting the massive bears beneath them.

After averting their course, the pair of paragliders were able to land just to the right of the bear’s enclosure. What could have been a completely tragic tale is now just a fascinating story – thank goodness.
