Residents of a Singapore neighborhood got the surprise of a lifetime when they spotted a venomous snake at a playground. According to Must Share News, the deadly snake was spotted near the children’s play area.

The venomous snake in question was a black spitting cobra. The black spitting cobra is classified as a highly venomous snake. The African Snake Bite Institute shares that “Its venom, like that of all spitting cobras, is potently cytotoxic, causing severe pain, swelling, and tissue damage.” If that wasn’t enough, “It also has the ability to spit its venom and does so effectively.

Naturally, it is easy to understand why residents may be alarmed. Yahoo News shared that Chelsia Lee shared photos of the snake. She, along with various other residents, is seriously concerned for parkgoers’ safety.

What Happens Next

Lee shared that the park has a lot of stray cats and that many people come to the park to feed the homeless felines. “I hope feeders will be more alert during this period when most snakes are likely to come out to seek warmth from the cold weather,” she told the outlet.

Unfortunatley, this is an increasing development. As more and more human expansion continues, construction pushes into wildlife territories. As we continue to encroach on their territory, human-wildlife interactions will become more common. Therefore, it is reasonable to predict that this may not be the only venomous snake these residents see on their playground.

Some things to remember are that these snakes, along with most wild animals, only attack when they feel threatened. Therefore, if you see this snake, be sure to give it plenty of space. Finally, having snakes in the neighborhood isn’t all bad. While being bitten by one is dangerous, they do help control rodent populations, which helps reduce the spread of vector-borne diseases.”
