Rescuers Reach Hiker Who Fell Into Volcano, But It Was Too Late

Indonesian rescue crews retrieved the body of Brazilian tourist and hiker Juliana Marins, who fell from a hiking trail and plummeted into an active volcano on Saturday. Sadly, they weren’t able to reach her before she died. The tragedy occurred on Mount Rinjani on Indonesia’s Lombok island. Marins was reportedly on a guided tour with five other tourists, but she got left behind, and that’s when she fell. A volunteer mountaineer was the one who finally reached Marins’ body on Tuesday.

The conditions on Mount Rinjani are treacherous, but Marins’ family (and many others) are not convinced that the rescue was handled appropriately. Marins reportedly fell nearly 500 feet initially, but she had slipped to more than 1,600 feet into the volcano’s crater by Monday.

Misinformation plagued the search-and-rescue efforts. At one point, the family says authorities shared “false information” and that a fake rescue video was circulating online. In reality, the family claimed Marins didn’t receive any assistance while she could have been alive and suffering.
