Sea Otters Terrorize Surfers, Commandeer Surfboards (Again)

Remember the surfboard-stealing sea otter, Otter 841, who went viral a couple of years ago for stealing surfers’ boards off the coast of Santa Cruz, California? Well, at least one sea otter is following in her footsteps (or maybe it’s her—no one knows).

A new series of incidents have prompted officials at Steamer Lane, a popular Santa Cruz surf spot, to post “aggressive sea otter” signs, warning surfers and beach goers about the otters’ latest favorite hobby: Stealing surfboards. In one case last week, an otter bit a surfer’s foot, and then when she got off her board to investigate, the animal commandeered her surfboard, sitting on it for 20 minutes.

Since then, it’s happened at least one other time to a different surfer. Beach goers and Santa Cruz surfers interviewed by local news seem to think it’s funny, noting that surfers are in the otters’ territory, after all.
