Sound on: Mating Lions Are ‘Not Your Average Wake-up Call’

“A lion’s roar isn’t just something you hear—it’s something you feel,” wrote Alie Guilmette and Luke Rauby in an Instagram post. “And this morning, we felt it.” The human pair says they heard a mating pair of lions making a whole lot of noise at sunrise, waking them up from inside their tent in Zimbabwe’s Somalisa Camp. The raucous noises were both unsettling and exciting, considering how close the animals were.

“The night before, our guide Dixon mentioned that a mating pair had been hanging around camp all day—and they weren’t leaving anytime soon,” reads the post. “When lions mate, they do so every 20 minutes for days. Sure enough, at sunrise, we were jolted awake by their calls rumbling through the morning air, just a short distance from where we had slept. Definitely not your average wake-up call.”

Turn your sound up to get a taste of this not-so-average wake-up call—a mating pair of lions chatting to each other right outside a tent:
