A remote camera filmed a Sumatran orangutan using a canopy bridge over a road for the first time. The Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS) says researchers have been waiting for this important moment for two years.

“Breaking news! For the first time ever, a Sumatran orangutan has been filmed using a canopy bridge to overcome forest fragmentation,” wrote the SOS in an Instagram post sharing the footage. “This truly is the best video you’ll see all day—all year maybe!”

The footage shows a young male orangutan carefully making its way across the bridge. About halfway across, the ape stops and looks around before continuing the rest of the way.
According to the SOS, the canopy bridge is there to help orangutans bypass the Lagan-Pagindar road in North Sumatra. Before the bridge, this road created a physical barrier to the rest of the forest for over 300 wild orangutans.
“For two years, we have watched and waited for this moment: an orangutan to use one of the canopy bridges to cross over the public road,” wrote the SOS. “This is it. The moment we have been patiently waiting for.”
