The Votes Are in: Two Famous Bald Eaglets Now Have Names

Two young eaglets are already much loved, not only by their parents, Jackie and Shadow, but also by many thousands of animal lovers around the world. The non-profit organization Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) operates a nest camera in California’s Big Bear Valley, and the proud parents recently welcomed two babies to the world. Local third-grade students voted on the eaglets’ names, and the results are now in.

“The Votes Are In!” wrote FOBBV in an Instagram post sharing the good news. “[. . .] The Big Bear Valley 3rd grade classrooms have spoken . . . The winners are SANDY and LUNA.”

Prior to the vote, the non-profit asked the public to submit ideas for the eaglets’ names. In its reveal post, FOBBV noted that Sandy was the most popular name entered. This perhaps isn’t surprising, considering that Sandy Steers, the biologist who launched the nest cam back in 2015 and who served as executive director of FOBBV, recently died. The name also received the highest number of votes.
