“Do you recognize this animal?” asks the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in a recent post sharing a trail-cam footage of an elusive African carnivore. The image is from Cross River National Park in Nigeria, and it shows a small carnivorous mammal—a crested servaline genet (Genetta cristata)—that humans very infrequently see in the rainforest, unless they’re reviewing camera-trap footage.

“With its spotted coat and ringed tail, slipping almost unseen through the rainforest of Nigeria’s Cross River landscape is one of Africa’s most elusive carnivores: the crested genet,” wrote WCS in its Instagram post sharing the rare photo. “This mostly nocturnal mammal is a remarkable climber. As it hunts rodents, birds, reptiles, insects, and other small prey, it helps keep the forest ecosystem in balance.”
