The group was reportedly hiking at Tuolumne Grove, a giant sequoia grove in Yosemite National Park, when the group heard a loud crack. Seconds later, a large tree branch and several smaller branches came falling from the sky. The large branch landed on top of Lin, and her boyfriend told SFGate that paramedics believed it likely killed her instantly.

Lin’s loved ones are seeking answers from the park regarding trail maintenance in the aftermath of this tragedy. SFGate reports that the park closed the trail after Lin’s death, but it has since reopened to the public.

Please remember that no matter how established a trail may be, falling branches are always a risk. Always be aware of your surroundings, and if you hear a cracking sound, seek cover immediately.
