Jeni Price Desilets and her hiking partner were walking across a bridge when, suddenly, the hikers realized they weren’t alone. A black bear was walking toward them, so they had to slowly back up until they got safely off the bridge. As they did, Desilets was talking to the bear, letting out some nervous energy while also letting the bear know they were humans. She was also filming, and her video has gained a lot of traction online.

“Are you ever soooo deep in conversation on a bridge that you don’t notice you have company (that turns out isn’t a dog off leash) until they’re 12 feet away,” asked Desilets in her Instagram post sharing the video.

Although the post isn’t tagged with a location, one person in the comments section seems to recognize it as the Canyon View Trail in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada.
Thankfully, the hikers did exactly what they are supposed to do in this situation. They stayed calm, didn’t run, and made themselves known. The bear finished crossing the bridge and then went on its way. Meanwhile, Desilets lamented that her mom would likely scold her for not bringing bear spray.
