Have you ever seen a snake climb a tree before? Your answer probably depends on where you live. The NJ Pinelands Commission, a state agency that oversees the protection of the Pinelands Area of southern New Jersey, recently shared footage of a massive northern pine snake climbing a tree with unnerving speed and agility. Many people in the comments section say they didn’t expect to see such a thing in New Jersey.

“SCALING UP: Happy Snake Saturday! Turn up the volume while watching a native northern pine snake expertly climbing a tree in the New Jersey Pinelands,” the agency wrote in its Instagram post. “[. . .] Northern pine snakes are non-venomous constrictors that can grow more than six feet in length. They are listed as a threatened species in New Jersey.”
“New fear unlocked!” wrote one person in the comments section.
“I did not know NJ had large tree snakes!” wrote another.
