Hiking PSA: Not All Chirps Are Birds (Could Be a Mountain Lion)

Caine Delacy recently shared a public-service announcement for hikers—not all chirps you hear in the wilderness come from birds. Mountain lions also make a chirping sound, and it’s best that hikers can identify it when they hear it.

“Just a quick PSA. Not all chirps are birdies!!!” Delacy wrote in an Instagram post sharing footage of a mountain lion on a trail cam making its unique chirp. “This mother was calling her cubs in the area. She had three older likely leaving their mom soon, cubs that were all in the area this day. They spent some time lounging and grooming in this spot and over the years this one flat area has yielded lots of wildlife.”

Watch a mountain lion chirp below, and be sure to turn your sound up (or see it here).
