WATCH: Young Hiker Has First Grizzly Bear Encounter on the Trail

While hiking in Glacier National Park, a young girl experienced her first grizzly bear encounter on the trail, and she handled it like a pro. Her mom recorded the moment and gave her daughter a brief interview afterward, then she shared the video and some bear-safety tips on Instagram for those hiking with kids.

“Let’s talk Bear Safety when hiking with kids in Glacier,” wrote Kelly Handley in her social-media post. “Proud of my girl for staying calm during her first Grizzly encounter in Glacier National Park. I hope she always values and respects the power and beauty of nature!”

Handley goes on to share some of her favorite tips for parents hiking with kids, including the “sandwich rule” (i.e., one adult in front and one in back with the kids sandwiched between them), teach kids how to handle a bear encounter before the hike, and always carry bear spray.
