What Are First Day Hikes? Here’s Why You Should Start the New Year Outdoors

One of the best ways to kick off the new year is by getting outdoors for a hike. A few years ago, multiple state park systems announced “First Day Hikes” in an effort to get more people outside and visiting their local parks.

Today, the mini-holiday is celebrated on January 1 by parks from city size to national parks. The tradition has grown past hiking. Parks invite people to run, bike, paddle, and more as long as they enjoy nature. Not only is being outdoors great for your physical health, but multiple studies now show why it’s essential for your mental well-being.

Here’s why you should consider starting off 2024 with a hike.

Health Benefits of Hiking

Physically, hiking has a lot of benefits. Despite feeling like you’re only walking, hiking can be a full-body workout, especially on rugged trails. Hiking helps build strong muscles and bones, and can improve your sense of balance. Hiking is also amazing for your heart health. This benefit includes a reduced risk of stroke, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Studies have shown for a long time that nature benefits your mental health. These studies and the results only grew with the pandemic in 2020. More people than ever were trying to get outdoors for fresh air. According to the National Park Service, being outside also helps open your senses and improve your sensory perception. This occurrence is from your body taking in all the sights and sounds that come with being in a natural space.

The positives of going for a hike don’t end there. A study Outdoors.com wrote about in April of this year showed that hiking is also great for relationships. Being outdoors with friends and family can deepen a relationship. While women were found to enjoy more physiological benefits from hiking and forest therapy than men, “both genders profited mentally from contact with nature.”

Finding a First Day Hike event is easy. You can always head to the nearest national park or find a local trail and plan your own hike. Plus, plenty of state park systems have their events planned. Here are a few states:
