The winners of the 2024 Sony World Photography Awards have been announced, but it’s the wildlife photography produced by the runners up that knocks our socks off. Let’s see if you agree. Here are just a few of the short-list finalists in the Natural World & Wildlife category.

In this first image, Christopher Ratcliffe Iverson of Nature’s Echoes Photography says he “caught an unforgettable moment with a fox in a field that glowed like spun gold.”
Photographer Thien Nguyen Ngoc captured the incredible moment below. A sperm whale surfaces as her calf nurses.
Next, Pedro Jarque Krebs’ wildlife portraiture is nothing short of incredible. His photo of roosting bats made the short list in the 2024 Sony World Photography Awards competition.
Finally, there’s this absolute gem captured by Jonathan McSwain. Seeing these playful river otters frozen in time gives us goosebumps.
We think this is wildlife photography at its best. Which image is your favorite?
