Launched in 2015, the Adventure Sports Podcast has interviewed survivalists like Bear Grylls, as well as rock climbers, ultra runners and boaters. The show focuses on people who have done big things in the backcountry, but in an often relatable way. The highly personal shows give an in-depth look into adventure and what drives people to get outdoors.
“It’s very exciting. After this many years, we’re finally a part of a network, another brand. It’s really cool to be so closely associated with Outdoors.com and its partnership with Bear Grylls. I can’t wait for the adventure that comes along with that,” says Mason Gravley, the podcast’s host, about the new partnership.
Adventure Sports Podcast’s 1,000th Episode
In this week’s 1,000th episode, we hear from Alastair Humphreys. He’s an adventurer and motivational speaker who has biked 46,000 miles around the world.
In the episode, Humphreys discusses what it means to adventure, including the importance of “micro-adventures” or taking advantage of what is local. His website defines it as “An adventure that is short, simple, local, cheap – yet still fun, exciting, challenging, refreshing and rewarding.” Basically, the idea is not to worry about every adventure being epic and huge and requiring you to travel to far off destinations. There are adventures right in your own backyard.
Humphreys spent a whole year on micro-adventures by never leaving his local community. While he was worried it would become boring, he learned a lot of life lessons about getting outdoors and finding adventure.
“I had a general overall experience of just being amazed at how little I paid attention to anything all my life,” says Humphreys about his experience focusing on hyper-local adventures and how rewarding it was. “I did a biology degree at university, so I should know a bit about stuff, but I knew absolutely nothing.”
Humphreys says he found a mix of local fauna and flora, along with history around the area he calls home. The time spent outdoors was essentially a do-it-yourself biology lesson.
