Service Dog Gets Loose and Chases Deer in Glacier National Park

A bystander was “sad and disgusted” when a service dog (although the bystander does not believe it was a real service dog) got loose from its owner in Glacier National Park and ran off trail to chase a deer. At the beginning of the video, you see a person straining to keep a dog at bay, but then the dog breaks free and runs off into a field that’s blocked off to visitors. The dog chases a deer off into the distance as bystanders share a few choice words about the situation.

“Sad and disgusted by not 1, but 2 misrepresented service animals getting loose and chasing off wildlife in Glacier National Park,” wrote the human behind the Reggie’s Pit Crew Instagram account. “This is a disgrace to people who actually require task trained service animals to enjoy the parks, and makes it harder for their legitimate service animals to work. Not to mention that this behavior is unsafe for everyone involved, especially in grizzly country!”

The person claims to have reported the incident to park officials.

For the record, service animals are allowed in Glacier. Here are some of the park’s rules for bringing service animals into the national park:

  • Service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered.
  • Food for a service animal is a bear attractant and must be stored accordingly.
  • Service animal fecal matter must be picked up and disposed of properly in a trash container.
