Explore.org’s Brooks Falls Brown Bears livestream gives viewers from around the world an unfiltered look at Alaska’s brown bears as they hunt for salmon in Katmai National Park and Preserve. Occasionally, this means that something upsetting happens, and folks see it live. This happened a couple of days ago on the Kat’s River View camera, when a brown bear killed another bear’s COY (cub of the year) and ate it.

Katmai Conservancy made a statement about the incident on social media, and Explore.org hosted a live play by play on YouTube. Bear 806, a mother bear with two cubs of her own, was the bear that chased down the unrelated cub. Scientists believe the cub belonged to Bear 909. In the play-by-play discussion, biologists say they’re not entirely sure why 806 killed the cub, but they suggest it could have been because the cub triggered her chase instinct when it tried to run away.
