Alaska Bear Cubs Climb Precariously High in ‘Nanny Tree’

Two grizzly-bear cubs clung to a so-called “nanny tree” as their mom went fishing. The cubs were supposedly safer way high up in the tree than they were on the ground, where a whole group of grizzlies (including dominant males) were hunting for salmon at Brooks Falls in Katmai, Alaska.

Wildlife photographer Keith Moore captured footage of the two bears swaying in the tree branches.

“Just another day in bear-adise! It’s finally starting to feel like July here at Brooks Falls, with bigger numbers of bears showing up,” Moore wrote in his Instagram post sharing the video. “[. . .] Bear 909’s two spring cubs cling to the top of a dead spruce tree, crying, while they wait for mom to tell them to come down. In the background are some the largest, most dominant bears around, so staying up high in the tree is the safest option. It’s never a dull moment here in Katmai!”
