A family is warning their community after a strange and unexpected encounter with a mountain lion, which strolled right into their home, stared at a man standing in the kitchen, and then scurried out the back door. The incident occurred in La Verne, California, which is close-ish to the foothills of some mountains, but Jeff Tenney says this is extremely uncommon. Tenney, the man in the kitchen, said he didn’t feel threatened, just confused and concerned for his dog, which was sleeping out in front of the house (which explains why the door was open).

The home intruder struck on Saturday afternoon, while kids’ parties were going on in the neighborhood, according to ABC7 News. Tenney was in his mother’s kitchen when suddenly he felt a presence and saw something large out of the corner of his eye. He and the mountain lion stared at each other before the animal ran out of the back door, through the pool, and over the fence.
Tenney says he ran out to the front yard to check on his dog, Bandit. Bandit slept through the whole thing. The family’s Ring doorbell camera captured the moment the mountain lion walked right past Bandit and into the home.
