Most bear-encounter videos don’t show you bear spray in action. A viral video from Lake Tahoe, California, however, does show the moment a bear began to charge at a man, and he did exactly what he’s supposed to do—sprayed it with mace. Cortlandt Koerwitz shared his video on Instagram a few days ago, and news outlets began picking it up.

“I’ve had people ask if this is Ai. Ha ha no,” Koerwitz wrote in his post. “The bear had gotten into our garbage earlier and was aggressive toward my daughter and her friends when they startled it. And we had ice chests out with food and drinks for boating. But I’ve never had one charge me.”
That is, he’d never had one charge at him until now. Thankfully, he knew what to do and was prepared with the right tool to scare the bear away.
