A curious wild cat in northern Iran came to investigate a trail cam, and the rare footage is now traveling worldwide, thanks to social media. A nature lover who goes by batebis on Instagram recently shared his trail-cam video of the Pallas’s cat walking up to the camera and gazing right into it, giving the world an up-close look at this elusive animal.

“The [Pallas’s] cat is one of the rarest and most unknown cats in Iran, and there is no exact information about its spread and population status in the country yet,” wrote batebis in his Instagram post sharing the trail-cam footage (translated into English). “The main habitat of this mysterious cat is located in Central Asia and Iran is located in the westernmost part of its global expansion range.”
