A family didn’t quite know what was coming when they spotted what appeared to be a tsunami wave in the sky moving ominously toward them. AccuWeather shared the video on social media, calling it a “dramatic shelf cloud formation.”

NOAA says a shelf cloud is often associated with squall lines, which may contain severe winds and brief “spin-up” tornadoes. Shelf clouds appear low in the sky and shaped like a wedge. They often form at the front edge of a thunderstorm.

“This looks like something straight out of an apocalypse movie!” wrote AccuWeather in an Instagram post sharing the video. “Sometimes these dramatic shelf cloud formations can look like giant tsunami waves sweeping across the horizon.”
