5 Steps To An Emergency Response Plan For Camping

“But we’re only going out for a few days. We’re not even doing anything extreme.”

We always think that tragic things will happen to other people. It’s seems that we’re wired that way, and perhaps that belief gives us the confidence to head out in the first place. The fact is that if you spend enough time in the woods, sooner or later something will happen to you. In that moment the health of all involved will depend on your preparation. Before you head out, spend a few minutes with the the emergency response plan below.

Videos by Outdoors

  1. First things first – is there cell reception? It’s easy to check on your carrier’s coverage map. Find out if you’ll even be able to dial 911 in the first place.
  2. Where is the first aid kit? “I thought it was in Kevin’s backpack!” That’s not the situation you want to be in. Make sure everyone knows where it is, and how to use it.
  3. Who has the most medical training? Do you know which people in your group have CPR training? Does anyone have first responder training? Learn who is the most capable and let everyone know.
  4. Where is the nearest medical facility? We’re often in an unfamiliar area when camping and probably have no idea where the nearest hospital is. You might want to find that out and jot down directions on how to get there.
  5. Allergies and emergency contacts. This is information that we all know about ourselves, but what if we’re unconscious? Do you know which friends are allergic to penicillin? Do you know who they would want you to contact? Find out.

All of these can be written down in a few minutes, and can make a world of difference, should you find yourself in a terrible situation. On the drive there take a the time to fill out your emergency response plan and make sure everyone knows where it is. Then pray that you never have to use it.
