According to SpaceWeather.com, a coronal mass ejection (CME) “grazed Earth’s magnetic field on September 17th.” That CME was small, but the one that is expected to come in contact with Earth’s magnetic field on Tuesday could lead to the Northern Lights being viewable from a number of U.S. states.

Geomagnetic activity happens more frequently around the autumn and spring equinoxes, according to Forbes.
