Camping in East Montana: Beaver Valley Haven
Camp Montana: I’m talking with Katherine today. She’s going to tell us all about Beaver Valley Haven in Montana. Katherine, why don’t you get us started by giving us a little bit of background Beaver Valley Haven?
Katherine: Well, I believe Beaver Valley Haven has been here for over 50 years. It’s always been the campground for the town. So, we also have five cabins that have been used by the people of the town and are now being used for oil field housing when we have one available. The town is absolutely a beautiful town. I have been here over a year, and I totally love the people and the place. There’s a lot going on in the summertime, because we’re so close to the Theodore Roosevelt Park and the town of Medora, which is a tourist town that puts on a beautiful outdoor show for people. And they have what they call a pitchfork fondue, which they cook your steak over open flame on a pitchfork. It’s really awesome.
Camp Montana: That sounds great.
Katherine: Yeah. We’re really close to Glendive, where they have all the wonderful dinosaur museums.
Camp Montana: Okay. And how close are you to the town?
Katherine: We are on the outskirts of the town. There’s a little creek called Little Beaver Creek that runs between us and the town. And we’re just on the south side, off of Highway 7. We’re a beautifully shaded RV park completely surrounded by a (Unclear 1:47.1) pasture, and the little creek runs all the way around the Park.
Camp Montana: Great. Now, if I were staying at Beaver Valley Haven for the weekend and I wanted to venture outside of the Park, what some of your favorite attractions in that are that you’d recommend?
Katherine: Well, we have what is considered the best place to eat. The Shamrock right here in town. So, of course, you know, food is first on the list. But yeah, horseback riding. You can go down into Theodore Roosevelt Park and take a horseback ride. And you can go on into Glendive and do some shopping. There’s a whole bunch of little antique store that are just – you’d have to ask where they’re at, but they’re there and they’re beautiful.
Camp Montana: Oh, wow.
Katherine: And just fishing, and the sightseeing, the bird watching is really awesome.
Camp Montana: Sounds gorgeous.
Katherine: There’s probably something for everybody except the people that like the mall. We don’t have any malls.
Camp Montana: That actually makes me want to come there all the more. Just two more questions for you, Katherine. If you were going to spend just one hour at Beaver Valley Haven, how would you spend your time there?
Katherine: I think I would just pull out my lawn chair and sit and watch the wildlife, because, like I said, we’re surrounded by Little Beaver Creek and I have a resident herd of whitetail doves that kind of hang around the outskirts, because we are in the town.
Camp Montana: Very cool. Yeah, cool. And last question: if you were just going to spend one night at Beaver Valley Haven in Montana, which specific campsite would you stay at and why?
Katherine: I believe I would stay at Beaver Valley Haven campsite because we’re quiet. We’re close to town if you need anything and far enough out so that you can actually hear the crickets chirp in the summertime. And if you chose to sit outside, it might be a little good to have mosquito spray on, but the stars, and in the wintertime, we get the Northern Lights. It’s just phenomenal.
Camp Montana: Gorgeous. And what do you think the best campsite is there?
Katherine: In this town?
Camp Montana: Within Beaver Valley Haven. Within the campground there, do you have specific spot that you would like to stay or that you think is the best place?
Katherine: I do have a favorite spot, and I save that for my cyclists that come in from cross-country.
Camp Montana: Cool.
Katherine: It’s under big, old cottonwood trees. There’s just enough shelter so that they’re sheltered from everything and they still get, you know, like I said, the night sky and they can see down into the creek.
Camp Montana: Nice.
Katherine: Yeah. If I had to pick my favorite spot, it would probably be camp number 3.
