Having a reliable source of fire when camping should be in your top 10 “Must Haves” when packing for a trip. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend getaway, or hoofing it off the beaten path for an extended outing — a campfire makes camp.
I was recently introduced to the new Trailblazer line of handheld butane torches from Bernzomatic, and I thought I’d share some of the features that really make them well suited for your next campout.

Bernzomatic Trailblazer Extender
The Trailblazer Extender is the larger of the new Bernzomatic camping torches. As the name implies, it’s designed to extend – and put the flame exactly where you need. Speaking of flames – there’s actually three powerful jet flames that burn hot (even in the windiest of conditions!)
The closest thing that I can even compare it to, is a flexible neck lighter – however, the Trailblazer Extender is rigid and rugged, and locks into two different positions at both 120º and 180º allowing you to reach into just about any angle of the fire. Unlike a traditional lighter, you can even light it upside down.
The exoskeleton of the Trailblazer Extender is constructed from metal components, ensuring that it’s built for the outdoors. To top things off, it has an integrated carabiner – meaning that you can attach it to a pack, or just as easily slip it into a pack. Regardless of where you store it, it’s going to be ready when you need it.

Bernzomatic Trailblazer Explorer
The Trailblazer Explorer is the more compact of two new camping torches, but equally at home outdoors. On a single butane fill, the Explorer will ignite 50x – with a powerful wind resistant flame.
One of my favorite features of the Trailblazer Explorer, is the protective swivel cap that covers the ignition and flame port. If you’ve ever had to deal with a ball of lint or debris inside your lighter, you’ll immediately recognize the insight that went into the design. Brilliant!
The lighter itself is constructed of impact resistant metal, and has a fully integrated carabiner. I’ve found myself attaching it to a rear belt loop on my pants – putting it in the perfect position when I need it. Although the Trailblazer Explorer operates with a single flame (compared to the Extenders tri-flame) it’s powerful, and can get your campfire going in no time.
