A recent Facebook post from the Texas Parks & Wildlife’s Nature Trackers has many looking to identify a strange insect. The group routinely posts a “mystery critter of the week,” but last week’s post has yet to find an exact answer.
The group shared a video of some kind of larvae dangling from a single silk thread. In the video, the cone-shaped creature appears to hover above a hand.
After about two dozen guesses, Texas Parks said they believe it is a young bagworm commonly found in oak and pine trees. The bugs are a moth, with the male bagworms eventually leaving their bag with wings. Female bagworms remain in the bag for mating and never grow wings. They only leave the bag to lay eggs and eventually die.
The exact species of this bagworm and whether or not it is native to Texas remains a mystery.
